Nearly half of Americans have too much visceral fat, the abdominal fat that surrounds your internal organs. Believe it or not, visceral fat contains cells that release inflammatory chemicals in the body, which can cause memory loss. This increases your chances of developing dementia. According to a study conducted by Johns Hopkins University, people with a healthy BMI have a lower risk for dementia than people with a BMI in the obese range.

Strokes also increase your chances of developing dementia, because each time the blood supply to the brain is cut off, brain tissue is damaged. This condition results in dangerously low oxygen levels while you’re sleeping. Your brain panics when it isn’t receiving adequate oxygen and startles you awake, potentially hundreds of times a night. 

In a 2009 study, researchers studied obese people with type 2 diabetes. They were placed into two groups—one group was put on a diet and received lifestyle counseling, while the other group only received lifestyle counseling. The participants in the first group lost, on average, over 20 pounds each, resulting in “markedly lower symptoms of OSA.” Participants in the latter group lost an average of less than 6 pounds and did not see as many improvements in their OSA. 

Losing just 10 pounds can reduce the narrowing of your windpipe, helping you to sleep soundly through the night. And when you sleep well, your leptin levels—the hormone that signals when you’ve had enough to eat—rise. So, a good night’s sleep can actually help you lose even more weight!

Studies looking at the effect of excess weight on cells of the human body have found that fat cells—especially abdominal fat cells—produce a large number of substances that cause inflammation in blood vessels. This inflammation, which results in plaque buildup in the arteries, can lead to strokes and heart attacks. When you lose 10% of your body weight, the levels of inflammatory markers circulating in the blood drop significantly, reducing the risk of heart attacks and strokes. 1. Lower Cholesterol Levels

Being overweight is associated with high levels of LDL, or “bad” cholesterol. As LDL cholesterol circulates through your blood, it can cause plaque to build up in your arteries. When enough plaque builds up, your arteries narrow and blood cannot pass through them easily. This can lead to a heart attack or stroke when your heart and brain aren’t receiving adequate blood flow. Losing weight and eating a healthy diet will help increase your HDL cholesterol, or “good” cholesterol, which helps keep LDL from depositing plaque on your artery walls. Losing just 10 pounds can lower LDL cholesterol levels by 10% or more. 

2. Lower Blood Pressure

Blood pressure measures the pressure that blood flow exerts on your artery walls as blood is pumped through your body. If you have plaque buildup in your arteries, your blood pressure will be higher, because it is harder for the blood to flow through narrowed arteries. Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas that allows your body to use sugar (glucose) from dietary carbohydrates for energy. Being overweight puts you at a much higher risk for developing type 2 diabetes—a metabolic disorder in which your body’s cells become resistant to insulin. Without the ability to use glucose for energy, the body cannot function apart from receiving insulin injections. What is Red Light Therapy?

It wasn’t long ago that red light therapy (RLT) was largely dismissed as a smoke and mirrors type of health and wellness treatment, with no real medical backing to lend it credit. Recently, however, the value of this therapeutic treatment has become more and more recognized in the United States by authorities in medical schools, scholarly journals, the press and media, medical practitioners, and therapists alike. As you’ll read in this article, the immense physical and medical benefits of red light therapy are why we created the Avanti Body System. So what exactly is red light therapy? 

What is red light therapy? 

The health benefits of light therapy have been well known since the time of the ancient Greeks. But when it comes to seeking out particular benefits, not all light in the spectrum will have the same effect. According to one peer-reviewed study, “light in the spectral range from 600 to 1300 nm is useful for promoting wound healing, tissue repair, and skin rejuvenation.” 

That’s where red light therapy comes in. Also known as photobiomodulation (PBM) or low-level light therapy (LLLT), red and near-infrared light therapy uses light that is naturally found in the ranges of 630-670 and 810-880nm. At these wavelengths, clients can experience safe light exposure, free from UV light, and receive optimal health benefits.  

How does red light therapy work? 

All living things need light to create ATP (cellular energy). Mitochondria, known as the powerhouses of the cell, use light to produce this energy, which helps the body repair, heal, rejuvenate and function at an optimal level. 

Unlike other laser therapies that intentionally cause controlled damage to the skin to induce the body’s healing process, red light and near-infrared light therapy directly stimulate the healing and repair of the skin, with no damage done!
