What is red light therapy? It wasn’t long ago that red light therapy (RLT) was largely dismissed as a smoke and mirrors type of health and wellness treatment, with no real medical backing to lend it credit. Recently, however, the value of this therapeutic treatment has become more and more recognized in the United States by authorities in medical schools, scholarly journals, the press and media, medical practitioners, and therapists alike. As you’ll read in this article, the immense physical and medical benefits of red light therapy are why we created Avanti Body. So what is red light therapy?
What is red light therapy?
The health benefits of light therapy have been well-known since the time of the ancient Greeks. But when it comes to seeking out particular benefits, not all light in the spectrum will have the same effect. According to one peer-reviewed study, “light in the spectral range from 600 to 1300 nm is useful for promoting wound healing, tissue repair, and skin rejuvenation.”
That’s where red light therapy comes in. Also known as photobiomodulation (PBM) or low-level light therapy (LLLT), red and near-infrared light therapy uses light that is naturally found in the ranges of 630-670 and 810-880nm. At these wavelengths, clients can experience safe light exposure, free from UV light, and receive optimal health benefits.
How does red light therapy work?
To know what is red light therapy would be giving incomplete information if we do not also tell you how red light therapy works. All living things need light to create ATP (cellular energy). Mitochondria, known as the powerhouses of the cell, use light to produce this energy, which helps the body repair, heal, rejuvenate and function at an optimal level.
Unlike other laser therapies that intentionally cause controlled damage to the skin to induce the body’s healing process, red light and near-infrared light therapy directly stimulate the healing and repair of the skin, with no damage done! These light wavelengths penetrate 8-10 millimeters—about a third of an inch—under the skin and affect the cells of all surrounding tissue, including blood vessels, lymph nodes, fat cells, nerves, and hair follicles.
What are the benefits of red light therapy?
Red light therapy is truly a full-body treatment. Every inch of your skin that is exposed to the light will reap the many benefits. Red light exposure can help:
- Repair sun damage
- Decrease inflammation
- Support weight loss & stubborn fat loss
- Fade scars and stretch marks
- Diminish wrinkles
- Improve the health of joints
- Enhance muscle recovery
- Boost athletic performance
- Stimulate hair growth
- Promote the healing of wounds
- Support the immune system
- Assist the detoxifying processes of the body
- Improve circulation
- Encourage collagen production
- Reduce eczema, rosacea and acne…and the list goes on

Frequently Asked Questions
Can red light therapy reverse aging?
Red light therapy (RLT) uses low wavelength red light to treat skin problems. Many experts think it can help with skin problems, scars, and signs of aging like wrinkles and age spots. Many of these claims are backed up by some evidence, but RLT is not a cure-all.
Does red light therapy work for eye bags?
Red and infrared laser therapy and LED light therapy are both good ways to get rid of puffy eyes. Red 660nm monochromatic light from a laser makes the body make new skin cells and collagen. This makes the skin around the eye feel noticeably smoother.
