The CDC recommends having two weeks of food stocked up at home. Unfortunately, this can mean a lot of processed junk food. Here are some of our top tips for healthy eating while isolating:

1. Choose healthy snacks.

The more stressed we are, the more likely we are to reach for salty, sugary snacks that ultimately leave us feeling unsatisfied. More time at home also leads to more mindless snacking. Keeping healthier items in the fridge and pantry will eliminate the temptation to consume processed foods like chips and cookies. Depending on availability of course, some options might include:

  • Nuts
  • Fresh fruit 
  • Vegetables and hummus
  • Dried fruit
  • Frozen edamame
  • Rice cakes with almond butter

 

2. Stock up on veggies. 

We all know that we should be eating more vegetables, but they are especially important during this lockdown. Frozen veggies are a great option since they will last much longer than fresh vegetables while retaining their nutritional value. As much as supplies at your local grocery store will allow, try to stock up on various colors to ensure you are getting a variety of nutrients. Be sure to follow guidelines for protecting yourself in the grocery store.  

3. Exercise portion control. 

Of course, this is easier said than done, but while you are stuck at home it can be easy to load up your plate without even realizing it. Try using smaller plates if you have them. We tend to fill our plates up, no matter what size they are. Drinking water before you eat can help you feel fuller. Make sure veggies take up the majority of your plate, as you can eat as many of these as you like! 

4. Practice mindful eating. 

Mindful eating is all about eating with intention and gratitude. Here are a few practical mindful eating tips you can start practicing today:

 

  • Take 3 deep breaths before you begin eating.
  • Pay careful attention to how your food looks, smells and tastes. 
  • Avoid doing other things, like watching TV, while eating—this distraction leads to eating higher quantities of food without realizing it. 
  • Chew each bite 15-20 times.
  • Put your fork down in between bites.
  • Check in with your body regularly while eating and pay attention to your hunger/fullness levels. Stop eating before you feel full as it often takes 20 minutes for your brain to register that your stomach is full.
  • Enjoy the experience of eating!

What is Chronic Inflammation?

What is Chronic Inflammation?

1. Eat a healthy diet. 

What we put into our body doesn’t just impact our weight and how we feel, it also affects the appearance of our skin. In addition to eating a diet free from processed foods and excess sugar, here are some specific foods to focus on for healthy skin:

3 More Health Benefits of Weight Loss

1. Lower Risk for Dementia

Nearly half of Americans have too much visceral fat, the abdominal fat that surrounds your internal organs. Believe it or not, visceral fat contains cells that release inflammatory chemicals in the body, which can cause memory loss. This increases your chances of developing dementia. According to a study conducted by Johns Hopkins University, people with a healthy BMI have a lower risk for dementia than people with a BMI in the obese range.

This condition results in dangerously low oxygen levels while you’re sleeping. Your brain panics when it isn’t receiving adequate oxygen and startles you awake, potentially hundreds of times a night. 

In a 2009 study, researchers studied obese people with type 2 diabetes. They were placed into two groups—one group was put on a diet and received lifestyle counseling, while the other group only received lifestyle counseling. The participants in the first group lost, on average, over 20 pounds each, resulting in “markedly lower symptoms of OSA.” Participants in the latter group lost an average of less than 6 pounds and did not see as many improvements in their OSA.

1. How long is each session? 

Each session lasts about 20-30 minutes. The initial session may take a little longer.

2. Is it painful?

Red Light Therapy for Hair Loss

Hereditary hair loss that occurs with aging is the most common cause of baldness. Known as androgenetic alopecia (AGA), it affects 50% of males by age 50 and 50% of females by age 80. When you hear the term male pattern baldness (or female pattern baldness), it refers to androgenetic alopecia. 

Red Light Therapy for Hair Loss

This 2014 study looked at 44 men with androgenetic alopecia. The participants in the study received red light therapy at 655 nanometers for 16 weeks—the study showed “significantly improved hair counts.”

Similarly, a 2017 systematic literature review found an “overall improvement in hair regrowth, thickness, and patient satisfaction following LLLT therapy.” The reviewers stated that it is a promising noninvasive alternative to surgical and medical therapy for hair loss. 

A 2018 randomized, double-blind study took 100 patients with AGA and gave each red light treatments on one-half of their scalps. The other side of their scalps were treated with sham (placebo) light therapy. After 24 weeks of treatment, the sides that were treated with RLT showed significantly greater hair coverage than the sham light-treated side. There was also a significant improvement in hair thickness, hair count, and hair coverage. 

A 2019 meta-analysis reviewed the results of 8 different studies that researched red light therapy for hair loss. “The quantitative analysis showed a significant increase in hair density for those treated by LLLT versus the placebo group.” This review found RLT to be an effective treatment for androgenetic alopecia in both men and women.

Also known as photobiomodulation (PBM) or low-level light therapy (LLLT), red and near-infrared light therapy uses light that is naturally found in the ranges of 630-670 and 810-880 nanometers. 2.  How does red light therapy work?

Red light therapy delivers safe, concentrated wavelengths of light to your body cells naturally. This means it doesn’t use chemicals, UV rays, or heat. These red and near infrared wavelengths of light stimulate the mitochondria of your body, similar to the way sunlight stimulates them. The mitochondria that are part of each cell in your body are often called the powerhouses of the cells because they create the energy your body needs to perform all of its functions. What is the Difference Between Red Light Therapy and Infrared Saunas?

A common question that we receive here at Avanti Body is: “what is the difference between red light therapy and infrared saunas?” Saunas and red light therapy are both natural treatments that provide numerous health benefits, but they work very differently. In today’s post, we’ll explore how each therapy works and some of the key differences between the two. 

How do Saunas Work? 

Saunas work by emitting dry heat, which raises your body’s core temperature. All of the health benefits that saunas provide rely on inducing thermal stress in your body. It’s kind of like when you have a fever, as this is the body’s way of healing itself. The heat can be delivered either by convection or with infrared light. 

  • Traditional Saunas: Traditional saunas are heated by warming the air inside the sauna through convection—temperatures usually reach between 150 and 180 degrees Fahrenheit. These often have rocks, and some people like to pour water on them to raise the humidity levels in the sauna. 
  • Infrared Saunas: Unlike traditional saunas, infrared saunas don’t heat the air, but actually heat the objects inside the sauna room, including you! These saunas use far infrared wavelengths to deliver heat directly into your body. Infrared saunas provide heat at a lower temperature than traditional saunas (120-140 degrees Fahrenheit). You may have heard us mention that we use red light and near infrared light here at Avanti Body. But what exactly are the differences when it comes to red vs. infrared light? And have you ever wondered what far infrared light is? In today’s post, we’ll talk about what makes these light waves different and the specific benefits each one has to offer. Red Light 

All light is made up of different wavelengths on the electromagnetic spectrum. Visible light ranges from red, which has longer wavelengths, to violet, which has shorter wavelengths. Each wavelength corresponds with a different color of the rainbow. Red light falls into this visible part of the spectrum between 630-700 nanometers. It penetrates superficial (surface) cells of the body, so it is primarily beneficial for treating the skin. 

Infrared Light

Infrared waves fall in the invisible portion of the spectrum. Far infrared and near infrared waves are both a part of this spectrum, although they are very different from each other, and can serve different purposes.

Near-Infrared Light 

Red and near-infrared light are often confused as the same thing but they are really quite different. Near infrared light is farther down on the electromagnetic spectrum, falling into the invisible portion, between 700 and 1200 nanometers. Near infrared light penetrates much farther into your body than red light, so it is able to reach deeper tissue, such as muscles and joints.

How Does it Work?

ATP provides the fuel that each cell needs to carry out all of its functions, including regeneration and healing. A 2012 study states that since “muscle cells are exceptionally rich in mitochondria, this suggests that LLLT [Low Level Light Therapy—another name for red light therapy] should be highly beneficial in muscle injuries.” 

Natural red and near-infrared light also increases antioxidant activity in the body. Antioxidants are molecules that help protect cells from damage caused by oxidative stress. Oxidative stress occurs when there is an imbalance between free radical production and antioxidants. This leads to the deterioration of cells. So as red light therapy penetrates the skin and stimulates antioxidants, it plays a key role in reducing the oxidative stress that comes with delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). 

Studies have also shown increased circulation after light therapy. Blood carries oxygen and nutrients to the tissues (including muscles), which are important for healing. Increased circulation also means that more toxins are being removed from muscle tissue.

Visible light ranges from red, which has longer wavelengths, to violet, which has shorter wavelengths. Each wavelength corresponds with a different color of the rainbow. Some of these specific wavelengths can be beneficial to our health in the form of light therapy. Red and blue light are the two most studied light therapies, but what are the differences between the two? What is Blue Light? 

Blue light has a shorter wavelength than red light on the electromagnetic spectrum. Blue light therapy is delivered in the 400-nanometer range. There is an inverse relationship between wavelength and energy, so this means it contains more energy than red light. Sunlight is a natural source of blue light and this used to be our only exposure to it. However, we are now constantly exposed to artificial sources of blue light through fluorescent and LED lighting, as well as through our screens. 

Natural blue light is beneficial to the body because our circadian rhythms (sleep-wake cycles) rely on it. Blue light signals the brain to turn off melatonin production. It’s great for mental and physical health, but only when we are exposed to it during the day. Being exposed to artificial blue light through our lighting and technology after the sun goes down, is problematic. Because blue light suppresses melatonin, watching TV and playing on our phones is throwing off our entire hormonal system. Melatonin is needed not only to get a proper night’s sleep, but also to produce other hormones. 

Blue Light Therapy 

This form of light therapy transfers blue light to the skin using specialized LED lamps. These are the main conditions that blue light therapy is used to treat:

  • Acne
  • Sun damage (prevents skin cancer from forming)
  • Depression and seasonal affective disorder (SAD)

What are Red and Near-Infrared Light? 

Red and near-infrared light are towards the other end of the electromagnetic spectrum so they have longer wavelengths than blue light, but contain less energy. Red light is delivered in the mid-600 nanometer range, and near-infrared light in the mid-800s. Near-infrared wavelengths are longer than those on the visible spectrum, and so they are invisible to the human eye. We use a combination of both red and near-infrared light here at Avanti Body to achieve maximum results. 

Red light actually promotes melatonin production, rather than suppressing it. Specific wavelengths of red light create a biochemical effect in our cells that serves to increase mitochondrial function. This stimulates ATP production in the body, which provides energy for every cell in the body. Without ATP production, our bodies can’t function at all. Without enough of it, they can’t function optimally. 

Red light can be extremely healing, but many of us are not exposed to enough red light, as blue light from our computers, phones, and TVs now dominates our evenings. This is why we need red light therapy!
